Who this course is for

Drivers who hold a Class B CDL and are applying for a Class A CDL. It is shorter than the full Class A theory course.

Upgrading from Class B to Class A for the first time requires ELDT before your Class A skills test (49 CFR 383.71(e)), however long you've held your Class B. FMCSA's 2019 upgrade rule lets Class B holders take this shorter course instead of the full Class A course. If you don't hold a Class B, take the full Class A course. Read the full upgrade guide.

What the course covers

22 lessons in five groups. Each lesson has a short reading (or audio), a timer, and a check before you move on.

Basic Operation 7 lessons

Orientation, control systems and dashboard, pre- and post-trip inspections, basic control, shifting and operating transmissions, backing and docking, and coupling and uncoupling.

Safe Operating Procedures 7 lessons

Visual search, communication, distracted driving, speed management, space management, night operation, and extreme driving conditions.

Advanced Operating Practices 3 lessons

Hazard perception, skid control and recovery, jackknifing and other emergencies, and railroad-highway grade crossings.

Vehicle Systems and Reporting Malfunctions 3 lessons

Identifying and diagnosing malfunctions, roadside inspections, and maintenance.

Non-Driving Activities 2 lessons

Hours of service, and fatigue and wellness awareness.

This is the theory course only.

You also need Class A behind-the-wheel training, on a range and on public roads, from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. The 2019 rule didn't change that part. Theory and behind-the-wheel have to be finished within one year of each other (49 CFR 380.603(c)(3)).

How it works

  1. Buy and enter your details. We ask for your name, date of birth and license number and state once, up front. They are encrypted and used only to file your record.
  2. Take the lessons. Read each lesson or listen to it. A short timer runs on every lesson, then a quick check. Miss a question and you see the explanation, then try again.
  3. Pass the final test. 25 questions, drawn at random from a bank of 40. You need 80% to pass, and you can retake it as many times as you need.
  4. Confirm your information. After you pass, you see exactly what will be submitted and confirm it. Once you confirm, the record is locked and filed.

Filing time

Standard filing within 24 hours. Need it faster? Instant Submission ($15 add-on): filed with FMCSA within minutes of you confirming your details.

Questions

Can I listen instead of read?

Yes. Each lesson has narration. The lesson timer still runs, so you can listen, read, or both.

What if I fail the final test?

Retake it as often as you like. Each attempt draws a fresh set of questions.

What if I made a typo in my details?

Fix it yourself before you confirm. After you confirm the record is locked and submitted, so check carefully.

Do you refund purchases?

No. These are digital products, so all sales are final. See the terms.
